There's something to be said about retirement if it includes all the golf you can play…at no cost! The Villages is a hugely popular retirement community in Central Florida that offers just that.

The community has about 30+ "executive courses". These 9-hole layouts are primarily par-3 holes with a few par 4 or par 5 mixed in. I had the opportunity to experience one of those courses – the Palmetto – when we were invited by friends and Villages residents Dwayne and Dee. This par 29 layout can play 1,787 from the back tees and 1,106 from the front tees.

It was immediately evident that despite the amount of play these courses receive, the course was in excellent shape. It was also deceivingly challenging! Several holes had water hazards and my ball managed to find a couple of sand traps along the way.

Usually, par-3 courses are difficult because a player has to be much more accurate. This was no exception . Water on 7 of the 9 holes provided plenty of challenge as well. Two lengthy par-4 holes gave us a chance to catch our breath and use a couple of different clubs.  It was a thoroughly enjoyable short round , one we hope to experience again soon!
